Keynote Speaker

Our keynote speaker is Dr. Allen Schmieder.

He is currently the Vice President of K-20 Education and Technology Futures at JDL Technologies, a Minnesota company that has been serving the nation’s schools for a decade. Dr. Schmieder was a distinguished professor at two major universities, contributing to the fields of leadership and technology.

He also served a highly regarded career at the U.S. Department of Education. Dr. Schmieder has served seven presidents, as well as started or helped start many national initiatives and programs. These initiatives and programs include: ERIC, School to Work and Career Education, Environmental and Energy Education, the Eisenhower Math-Science-Technology Program, the Technology Innovation Challenge Grants (TICG), the National Teacher Centers Program, the Blue Ribbon School Technology Standards and Technology Model Schools, Competency-Based Education and NDEA Institutes in the core subjects and for Librarians and Educational Media Specialists. He organized the first national government advisory committee on technology in l966 and designed and implemented the first government-wide conference on technology in education in 1990.

Dr. Schmieder has authored and/or edited over 200 books and articles. He has keynoted over 50 national conventions and has given major addresses in every state except Alaska. He developed the criteria and review process (involving six major educational organizations) for identifying almost 50 technology rich schools and developed “Standards for Technology Infusion Into School Management, Instruction, and Assessment.

He designed the first phase evaluation for the Technology Innovation Challenge Grant and a first draft proposal for evaluating the Technology Literacy Challenge Fund. Dr. Schmieder created the TICG clusters and developed and pioneered a plan for holding joint national TICG meetings with ISTE and AECT. He instigated and coordinated the first national joint conference between the TICG, TLCF and the CCSSO. He chaired regional TICG application reviews in three different regions.

He chaired the Minnesota State Committee on Technology and has been a leader in developing the highly acclaimed Minnesota eSchools Program--a program for transforming schools into technology-based 21st Century learning centers. He is currently leading both a state and national group in articulating a research and experiential foundation for a “Millennium School.”

As part of this initiative he recently organized a Minnesota State Summit Meeting on “The Millennium School,” in partnership with a statewide consortium of PT3 projects.
