Two new SCGCP Mini Grants

Two new Mini-Grants were awarded this month. Engineering for Girls is a collaboration between the Girl Scouts of Red River Valley and Roxton ISD. This project will provide six sessions for 4th and 5th grade girls to work on STEM projects and learn about STEM careers. Camp Invention is a 4-day summer camp for 1st through 6th grade Girl Scouts from the Lone Star Council. The camp will use curriculum from Invent Now, a program of the National Inventors Hall of Fame Foundation. Best of luck to these two new projects.

Time to apply for SCGCP Mini Grants

Applications for the SouthCentral Girls Collaborative Project Mini-Grants are now being accepted for the final 13 $1,000 mini-grants! There are a few requirements to get funding. Two or more organizations must collaborate on the grant activities to be considered for funding. Additionally, each of the organizations that are applying for a mini-grant must be registered in the Program Guide. Organizations don't have to have 501(c)3 status. The short two-page application which includes a budget of expected expenses is found on applications.

Phase three applications are due August 1, 2006, with award notification on August 15, 2006.

Compiling Parent Resource

I would like to compile a list of resources where parents can find STEM activities for girls. The links would be to lists of activities that are compiled and maintained, so that the lists are current. If you know of a list of Summer camps or STEM activities, please send them to me and I will add them to the website.

Beginning resources are:

My Summer Camps
http://www.mysummercamps.com/
Search for an activity such as computers, Aviation, Space, Math, Science and then search by location.
Educational Summer Camps by Hurst-Euless-Bedford Association for the Gifted and Talented
http://www.hebagt.org/summer_camps.htm
National and international camps in a variety of fields.

Great Resources

The Diversity Institute at the Center for Integration of Research, Teaching, and Learning offers a literature review of current research in equity issues. This resource can "facilitate awareness of the multifaceted nature of diversity."

The Society of Women Engineers has published their annual review of the literature on women in Engineering.
