How to provide services to rural areas
Small group report by Jennifer Mills
- Interactive TV as a resource
- Small colleges, libraries, bases near the rural areas involved
- Using speaker's bureaus, e.g., AAUW, retired professionals
- Extension agencies, work force commission
- Programs – in a box – area of concern – is a program in the box of the same level of quality as you would get in an urban area?
- Camps e.g., Heard Natural Science Museum, she is available to anyone in the metroplex area – they have camps in the summer, they can do camps in the public schools, she invites folks to talk to her
- Teach small communities how to take baby steps – the word engineer can make parents feel overwhelmed
- Using Community events in conjunction with existing events
- City employees as a guest speakers, local state employees (students could make movies – career day)
- Using the internet for job searches, collaborative projects, e.g., having a chat room available with schools from different areas
- Locating Foundations
- Using the SCGCP listserv to be specific – Be specific, we need a professional to talk about XXX in XXX.
- AAUW sponsors EYH across the state, we are very happy to have rural girls, but they need to come in a bus using carpool, transportation, (Girls don't come individually to conferences and events - you need to provide transportation for them)
Quick infomercial about EYH – Texas usually does middle schools. Female mentors come in and do one hour or 45 minutes hands on sessions. Girls choose their sessions. What am I ever going to do with ___ ?
