Water Guide INTRODUCTORY UNIT |
Introductory Unit Goal: The learner will establish communication with other children in the project.
| Activities | Curriculum Connections |
| 1 . Have students work in cooperative groups to write 3 questions to ask children in other locations. | |
| 2. Begin a notebook, project corner or other way of organizing correspondence from children in other locations. This could be done as a class project as well as individual projects. The class should determine how and what they will organize in their notebook. If the local computer system allows the teacher to save electronic mail messages to disk, there should be floppy diskettes dedicated to the project, saving electronic mail correspondence in an organized fashion. (One way of organizing the class information is by telecommunication site. There could be a section dedicated to each site with a map marking the location.) | |
| 3. Have the children write a short essay answering the following question, "How would you describe children from the country of _______ ?" Include this in the project notebooks. At the end of the unit, have the children write another essay and compare it to this one. How have their descriptions changed after having communicated with other children? | |
| Optional Activities for Additional Integration: | |
| 1. Make a database with information such as name, age, pets, favorite food, favorite movie or television show, etc. to share with children on-line in other places. | |
| 2. Send database via electronic mail. This should stimulate a lot of interesting questions and communication. | |
| 3. Begin a list of "How we use water". Send it to the next class to read and add some of their uses. Have them send it on to the next class, etc. Additional topics such as "How we waste water" could be used as well, either simultaneously or subsequently. Once the lists are formed, have the children classify the list items according to categories that emerge. | |
