UNIT THREE - USING WATER TODAY

Unit Three Goal: Students will discover and discuss how water is used today in their area and share their findings with project counterparts.


Objective Three:
Learners will determine additional ways in which water is used in their area and share the results with project participants.
Time allowance for activities:
4 class periods
Materials:
straws, paper clips, scissors, tape, plastic bags, pins, on-line research sources, subject matter experts or research sources

 

Activities Curriculum

1. Discuss other uses of water such as industrial uses (cleaning, hydro-electric power, etc.) LA 3.4A
2. In cooperative groups, have students make models of a water wheel. Have each group creatively design and build their models using the following materials provided by the teacher: paper clips, straws, scissors, tape, plastic bags and pins. Compare models to see which one is most efficient and discuss reasons why one may be more efficient than another. LA 3.12H

3. Discuss additional uses such as agriculture, irrigation, water for livestock, etc. List these uses. LA 3.4A

4. Have students find out how much water it takes to raise a 100 acre crop of wheat, hay, etc. and how much is necessary for 100 head of cattle. What happens to crops if there isn't enough water (drought) or too much water (flooding)? SCI 3.2A
5. Invite a farmer/rancher to be a guest speaker. LA 3.1D, 3.3C, 3.4A

6. Send the findings of these activities to the project participants. TA 8A
