UNIT TWO-USING WATER IN OUR PAST

Unit Two Goal: Students will understand the history of water in their area and share that information with other project classes.


Objective One:
Students will research historical data concerning water in their area.
Time allowance for activities:
3-4 class periods
Materials:
resource materials for research such as local history books, on-line research sources, e-mail addresses for focal agricultural agencies and environmental scientists.

1. Using research tools such as local history books, on-line research sources and local people, find out how important water was to the settlement of the area. SS 3.1A, 3.2A, 3.16A, 3.16B, 3.4B

2. Find out which area lakes are natural and which are constructed. Why were lakes constructed? Use on-line experts as data sources. TA 5A, 6B

3. Has the local area experienced any years of drought or flooding? How little or much rain fell in those years? What were the social and economical implications of these events? Solicit opinions from on-line experts. TA 5A, 6B, 8B, 8C

4. Summarize the history of water in the area to be shared with electronic mail counterparts. Include the research tools used, and how important water may or may not have been in the settlement of the community. Evaluation:

The students may be evaluated based upon the quality of their summaries about the history of water in their area. LA 3.14A, 3.14B, 3.14C, 3.14D
