Water Guide
UNIT ONE - WATER IN OUR COMMUNITIES

Unit One Goal: The students will explore the nature of water in their area and its source and share their findings.


Objective Two:
The students will conduct research, record and graph the historical monthly amount of rainfall in their area and share these findings with their project counterparts.
Time allowance for activities:
1-2 class periods
Materials:
Graph from objective one activity, research materials such as newspapers and almanacs, graph for monthly rainfall (appendix)

 

Activities Curriculum
Connections
1. For monthly rainfall, use the month just recorded and conduct research to find other months. A few good sources include the television, radio, or newspaper weather division. LA 3.12 D, 3.12 E
2. Graph the monthly rainfall for one year (using historical data). Discuss the wet and dry months. Which month had the most/least rainfall? MA 3.14A , 3.14B, 3.14C

3. When sharing information via electronic mail, give the daily amounts and the monthly amounts. When this information is received, graph the results from the other classes and compare it to your graph. Discuss the similarities and differences. TA(3-5) 8A
4. Find the different places where rainfall information can be obtained (e.g. news media, newspaper, television stations, scientific groups). LA 3.12D, 3.12F

5. Have the students conduct research on rainfall for the past 50 years and graph the averages. Compare this historical data to present data. MA 3.13A, 3.13B

Evaluation
