My first thought is that we are trying to answer the same question as "How do we make education more relevant and effective for the students k-12?"
Technology is a resource like a dictionary, a typewriter, a set of encyclopedias, a set of calculators, a set of rulers, or a nice fresh stack of construction paper. What can we do with it that will positively affect learning? (or is that effect - I KNOW! I can use the thesaurus built right here into the word processor - technology!)
Age appropriate applications must be demonstrated to the teachers to stimulate their imaginations and creativity. A "make and take" session followed by brainstorming on what else could be done with this skill… if we made a certificate, couldn't we use the same process to make a …what?? Think out of the box! Think about YOUR discipline, YOUR kids, YOUR classroom. Then allow time for doing before leaving the session. Follow a model, discuss, brainstorm, apply.
I think that discussion needs to be focused on grade levels, too. What a k-2 teacher can do with technology… What a 3-5 teacher can do with technology… What a 6-8 teacher can do with technology… Then we need to go by disciplines, too… What can a secondary math teacher do…science…language arts…
Come on, everyone! Jump in here anytime. I've heard my ideas before. I would love to hear yours!
