Project Ideas K-2

  These are resources for teaching the Technology Applications Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TA TEKS). The TA CED wants to share these resources, but is not responsible for any changes to external sites. Please note that the TEKS listed may not be the only TEKS that a particular activity could address. In addition, many activities may be modified for a different grade level.
# Activity or Project TEKS
1 Alphabet Books
Students create pages that include a large letter, a graphic, and a word matching the letter and the graphic. Illustrations can be obtained from clipart files, drawn by hand, or created in a graphics program.

4 Computer Mouse Clicks
Physical Education activity that reviews basic technology terminology. An area is marked off as monitor with a smaller area as the trash can. Students play the parts of a computer including mouse, cursor, and files. In a game similar to freeze tag, the students act out deleting files.

5 School Tour
After listening to a number of books about schools and teachers, students create a virtual tour of the school with a multimedia program and a digital camera. Students record descriptions of the pictures.
Carolyn McCollum and Debra Lunsford, Region 8 TLA off site
Alternative(s) for younger students:
Younger students can create a tour of a limited scope that includes the classroom, playground, and a few other locations such as the lunchroom, principal's and nurse's offices.
Extension(s):
Include a map and describe routes to various locations (SS 1.5A 2.5B LA K.3B 1.3B 2.3B)

Sort and Graph
Begin by sorting the students in a variety of ways (based on shirt color, age, number of siblings, etc.). Count and record the number in each set. Choose one grouping to graph on a large paper using cut outs to create a picture graph. At the computer, students use a paint or draw program and clipart to create their own picture graph of other relationships.
Alternative(s) for older students:
Each student or a pair of students is given a bag of colored candies to sort by color. Picture or bar graphs are created by each team. Graphs are compared. Predictions can be discussed and tested. (MA 1.10A 11C, 2.11B 12C)

7 Round Robin Stories
Use a word processor, presentation package, or hypermedia software to create a group story. The teacher begins a story and saves it to a file. Each student in turn reads the story then contributes and saves the file. Younger students can add one illustrated sentence. Older students can contribute a paragraph. The final product is read and edited by the entire class. Each class member receives a copy of the story for personal reading.

8 Number Books
Using a word processor, presentation package, or hypermedia software, students create a page for each number (1 - 10). Clipart or stamps are used to create the proper number of objects represented by the number.

9 Holidays
Students (individually or in groups) create multimedia presentation on specific holidays. The historical significance of the holiday is researched and included. Graphics, songs, sounds, voice or video clips can be created by the students and/or found on CD-ROMs or the Internet.

# Activity or Project TEKS
11 Post Cards
Students create postcards of community locations. Postcards contain pictures and a paragraph about the location.
Listed on Post Cards.
12 Graph-it
Use an application that allows student to use stamps (e.g., KidPix, Storybook Weaver, etc.). Teacher demonstrates use of line tools and stamps to create a picture graph. Students create a graph with a given set of data.
Example(s):
Title - A Trip to the Zoo; Stamps are used to represent the number of each animal seen during the trip; Legend used to indicate the number of animals represented by a stamp.
Extension(s):
Assign different values per symbol to different students.
Fernando Rosa, San Benito CISD

13 Flash Cards
Use stamps, draw and/or paint tools, etc. to create groups of four items. Make 3 of the items identical and one slightly different. Print out and laminate for classroom use. Use to teach differences and similarities.
Example(s):

Extension(s):
Each student creates a set of items and prints out the assignment. Then students rotate to another computer and use the pencil tool to circle the one that is different.
Fernando Rosa, San Benito CISD

14 Math Stamps
Students use an application that includes stamps (e.g., KidPix, Storybook Weaver, etc.). Students illustrate story with symbols.
Example(s):

Extension(s):
Assign each student a different problem; Print out on card stock (2 problems per page); Cut and laminate.
Make into word problems.
Use various operations.
Fernando Rosa, San Benito CISD

15 If I Could...
Students create a slide show based on the question "If I could be anything, I would be a/an..." Students need to support their question with additional slides. Slide shows must have text, audio, graphical, and video if possible.
Extension(s):
Additional statements could include:
If I could eat anything, I would eat...
If I could be anyone, I would be...
If I could go anywhere, I would go...
If I could change anything, I would change...

16 Mixed-up Stories newjune.gif (216 bytes)
Students listen to a story read by the teacher. The story is provided to the students on computer disk, but it is out of proper sequence. Students use cut and paste techniques to move text into the correct order.

17 Technology in the Community newjune.gif (216 bytes)
Students participate in a walking tour of the community to collect images of technology found in the school, the community and their homes. The data gathered will be organized, analyzed, and displayed by the students. Students construct a floor graph, a patterned big book, or a thank you card.
