Instructions to create stack

This particular stack could be created and used as a template for the teacher to type in questions and answers for reviews in any subject area; or it could be a project for students to create from scratch for their own review purposes (such as a research project). Other items may be added to the cards where appropriate, such as graphics, photos, videos and even animation.

  1. Create a new HyperStudio stack. (It is helpful to tear off and drag the tools palette and the color palette to one side for ease in getting tools or colors.)
  2. Click on the paint bucket in the tool palette and then select a background color (preferably solid) from the color palette. Click the paint bucket on the card fill the screen with the color.
  3. Click twice on the T in the tool palette. Choose a font, style, and text color. Size should be approximately 24 or 36.
  4. Place cursor at the top of the card and type the title (in this case "HyperStudy-O") .
  5. Click twice on the T in the tool palette again. Choose a font, style and text color. Size should be 18.
  6. Type the the category names under the title. In this case there are 3 categories simply named "Category 1", "Category 2", and "Category 3".
  7. Under the Objects menu, choose Add a button.
    a. Choose a type of button (one of the top 4), color of text for the button, and a background.
    b. Make sure Show name has an X in the box and type in 100, then click OK.
    c. The dialog box will ask where to place the button. Move the button under the 1st category, then click outside of the button.
    d. In the Actions box, under Places to go, choose Another card.
    e. Press Command - N to create a new card
    f. Choose a Transition, such as Iris open or Left to right, then click OK.
    g. If a sound is desired, click next to Play a sound under Things to do. Select a sound (such as Click). Then click OK.
    h. In the Actions box, click on Done.
  8. Repeat the steps in #7 for adding a button to add as many buttons as needed. Each horizontal row will have points of 100, 200, 300, 400, and 500, etc., so be sure to name the buttons accordingly. In this example only 5 row for each of the categories was used. Don't worry about the card numbers.

To Develop, the Question Cards:

  1. Press the first button for your first category. This should take you to a new card. ·It is recommended that you change the background color to make all question cards the same color, and all answer cards the same color. You can do this by clicking twice on the eraser in the tool palette and choosing a color.
  2. Next, create a button that will return to the main card (Card 1). To do this, under Objects menu, choose Add a Button.
    a. Drag the button to the lower left corner of the card and click outside of the button.
    b. In the Button appearance box, choose one of the top 4 types of buttons.
    c. Make sure that Show Name has an X. Type in "To Main Board" as the title of the button.
    d. Then choose click on Icon, and choose an icon (a left arrow or home icon) and click OK in the Icon box. Then click OK in the Button Appearance box.
    e. In the Actions box, on the left, choose Another Card (do not choose Previous Card).
    f. Press the left arrow on the screen to find the first card (or press Command - 1). When the first card is on the screen, press OK
    g. Select a Transition such as Iris open or Barn open
    h. On the right side of the Actions box, choose Play a sound. Choose a sound such as 7Tinkerbell, then click OK.
    i. Click Done in the Actions box. Test out the button to see if it works properly. Go back to Card 2.
  3. Next, using the button tool in the tool palette, click once on the button.
  4. Under the Edit menu, choose Copy a button.
  5. Go back to Card 1.
  6. Now, click on each button that you have made in each category. When you get to the new card, Paste the button (under Edit menu). This will give you some navigation ability while working on your stack. Do this for each button on Card 1.
  7. Now, use your first button in your first category to go to a blank card.
  8. Under Objects menu, choose Add a Text Object.
    a. Place the text field at the top of the card and resize to allow ample room for typing in questions.
    b. Click outside of the field to get the Text appearance box.
    c. Be sure to take off all X's in the boxes next to scrollable, draw frame, etc
    d. Choose a Text color and a background for it.
    e. Choose Style and pick a font, style, etc. about size 18 to 36
    f. Click on both of the OK buttons.
  9. In the text field, type, "the question is..." This is where a teacher using it as a template would be able to type in the review question.
  10. Using the field tool, select the field. Under the Edit menu, choose Copy a field.
  11. Go back to Card 1. Press on each one of the other buttons in every category to go to their blank cards (they only have a return button).
  12. Once on the card, choose Paste a field (under the Edit menu). Do this for all of the blank cards.

To Develop the Answer Cards:

  1. Starting at Card 1, press on your first button in your first category.
  2. Once there, under Objects menu, choose Add a button.
    a. Leave the button in the middle of the card and click outside of the button
    b. In the Button appearance box, choose one of the top 4 types of buttons. You may change the background color.
    c. Make sure that Show Name has an X. Type in "Press here for answer" as the title of the button.
    d. Make sure there is no Icon chosen. Then click OK in the Button Appearance box.
    e. In the Actions box, on the left, choose Another Card (do not choose Previous Card).
    f. Press Command - N to make a new card, then press OK.
    g. Select a Transition such as Iris open or Barn open.
    h. On the right side of the Actions box, choose Play a sound.
    i. Choose a sound such as OpenNote, then click OK.
    j. Click Done in the Actions box.
  3. Go to EACH question card (press each button on Card 1) and add a new button according to the steps above. The button will be in the middle of the card and will be below the text field holding the question.
  4. After doing all cards, go to the first question card. Using the button tool, click on the button that says '"To the Main Board."
  5. Under the Edit menu, choose Copy a button.
  6. Go to EACH question card, press the "Press here for answer" button. Once on the blank card (for answers), under Edit menu, choose Paste a button.
  7. After placing return buttons on each answer card, go to the first answer card for the first button.
  8. Under Objects menu, choose Add a text object.
    a. Place the text field at the top of the card and resize to allow ample room for typing in answers
    b. Click outside of the field to get the Text appearance box.
    c. Be sure to take off all X's in the boxes next to scrollable, draw frame, etc.
    d. Choose a Text color and a background for it.
    e. Choose Style and pick a font, style, etc, about size 18 to 36.
    f. Click on both of the OK buttons.
  9. In the text field, type, "The answer is..." This is where a teacher using it as a template would be able to type in the answers.
  10. Select the field using the field tool in the tool palette.
  11. Under Edit menu, choose Copy a field.
  12. Go to the answer cards for EACH question card and Paste this field. Be sure to save your stack!!!! You can go under the Extras menu to check the Storyboard to see how many cards. If the question cards are one color, and the answer cards are another color, they will be easily identified to see if all is complete.
