Multimedia - Sample Assignment in Two Parts with Rubric
Elements of Design

Program: PhotoShop
Peripheral: Wacom drawing tablet
Problem 1:
  • Create an example of each of the elements of design: line, shape, form, texture, color
  • Choose a simple object such as an apple or a leaf to repeat as a subject for each element
  • Use a separate document for each element
Objective:
  • To become familiar with the elements of design
  • To become familiar with the tools of PhotoShop
Timeline: Three 90 minute class periods
Procedure:

Line

  1. Open PhotoShop
  2. File/New
    Width.......... 3.5 in. Mode.......... RGB color
    Height......... 4.5 in. Contents...... White
    Resolution... 72 pixels/in
  3. Save as/   line (on your zip disk)
  4. Palette:  Swatches/black
  5. Tool:  pencil tool to create your chosen object in line only
    • Use thick and thin lines by changing the pressure of your stylus on the Wacom tablet
    • Size may also be changed with the Brushes Palette
    • Save often
  6. Label drawing Line with text tool
    • Click text tool, then click on document & bring up text box
    • Set size to 36 pt. & select desired font...type "Line"...click OK
    • On Layers Palette, click => Make Layer
    • Use move tool to place text very close to drawing
  7. Save

Shape

  1. Open PhotoShop
  2. Open completed line design
  3. Edit/Save a Copy/ of line design
  4. Save As/ shape (on your zip disk)
  5. File/Open (open shape from zip disk)
  6. Omit all detail inside design with eraser
  7. Palette: swatches/ select color
  8. Tool: paint can/ add color
  9. Label drawing Shape with text tool
    • Click text tool, then click on document and bring up text box
    • Set size to 36 pt. and select desired font...type "Shape"...click OK
    • On Layers Palette, click => Make Layer
    • Use move tool to place text very close to drawing
  10. Save

Form

  1. Open PhotoShop
  2. Open completed line design
  3. Edit/Save a Copy/ of line design
  4. Save As/ form (on your zip disk)
  5. File/Open (open form from zip disk)
  6. Palettes:
    Swatches/ for color
    Brushes/ for size
    Options/ for opacity
  7. Tools:
    Air brush
    Paint brush
    Magnifier (enlarge to clean up edges with eraser)
  8. Label drawing Form with text tool
    • Click text tool, then click on document and bring up text box
    • Set size to 36 pt. and select desired font...type "Form"...click OK
    • On Layers Palette, click => Make Layer
    • Use move tool to place text very close to drawing
  9. Save

Texture

  1. Open PhotoShop
  2. Open completed line design
  3. Edit/Save a Copy/ of line design
  4. Save As/ texture (on your zip disk)
  5. File/Open (open texture from zip disk)
  6. Palettes:
    Swatches/ for color
    Brushes/ for size
    Options/ for opacity
  7. Tools:
    Air brush
    Paint brush
    Pencil
    Eraser with white
    Magnifier (enlarge to clean up edges with eraser)
  8. Label drawing Texture with text tool
    • Click text tool, then click on document and bring up text box
    • Set size to 36 pt. and select desired font...type "Texture"...click OK
    • On Layers Palette, click => Make Layer
    • Use move tool to place text very close to drawing
  9. Save

Color

  1. Open PhotoShop
  2. Open completed line design
  3. Edit/Save a Copy/ of line design
  4. Save As/ color (on your zip disk)
  5. File/Open (open color from zip disk)
  6. Palettes:
    Swatches/ for color
    Brushes/ for size
    Options/ for opacity
  7. Tools:
    Air brush
    Paint brush
    Pencil
    Eraser with white
    Magnifier (enlarge to clean up edges with eraser)
  8. Label drawing Color with text tool
    • Click text tool, then click on document and bring up text box
    • Set size to 36 pt. and select desired font...type "Color"...click OK
    • On Layers Palette, click => Make Layer
    • Use move tool to place text very close to drawing
  9. Save

Program: PhotoShop

Problem 2:
  • Compile all the elements of design on one page with each element on a separate layer
  • Add title, name, subject, and period
Objective:
  • To become familiar with layers in PhotoShop
  • To design a page with good composition
Timeline: One 90 minute class period
Procedure:
  1. Open PhotoShop
  2. File/New
    Width.......... 7.361 in. Mode.......... RGB color
    Height......... 9 in. Contents...... White
    Resolution... 72 pixels/in
  3. Save as/   elements of design page (on your zip disk)
  4. File/Open, double click on line
  5. Lasso image and title
    • Lasso carefully leaving as little white space as possible
  6. Group layers by clicking in the small space immediately to the right of the eye of the inactive layer on the Layers Palette
  7. Edit/Copy
  8. Close line
  9. Edit/Paste Layer ...name layer line
  10. Image/Effects/Scale
    • Hold down Shift key and increase or decrease size
  11. Click on Move Tool and position image
  12. Save
  13. Repeat for each element of design until all five are arranged
    • Each image will be on a separate layer, so you must activate that layer on the Layers Palette to make changes
  14. Click Text Tool, add The Elements of Design, name, Multimedia, period.  On Layers Palette click => then Make Layer
  15. Save
