Unit 1: Introduction to Multimedia and Computers

Multimedia

  • Learning Activity 1: Lecture, demonstration of multimedia equipment and videos
  • Learning Activity 2: Video: History of Animation
  • Learning Activity 3: Tutorial of multimedia software (Director 7)
  • Learning Activity 4: Lecture, examples of Principles of Design

Computer

  • Learning Activity 1: Video on history of computers (Triumph of the Nerds)
  • Learning Activity 2: Explore Draw programs and tools in software (MS Paint, MS Word)
  • Learning Activity 3: Research time-line of computer development and graphic software evolution
  • Learning Activity 4: Discuss viruses, network security
  • Assessments: Vocabulary worksheets, time-lines, slide shows prepared by students.

Unit 2: Animation and Graphic Tools

Animation

  • Learning Activity 1: Create and modify individual images (logos, etc.) using computer drawing tools
  • Learning Activity 2: Develop a storyboard for a presentation
  • Learning Activity 3: Enhance a slide presentation with animation, sounds
  • Learning Activity 4: Transfer animation from computer to video
  • Assessments: Hard copy of storyboards; Rubric evaluations of shows

Graphic Tools

  • Learning Activity 1: Use a specialty graphics editing program (Ex. PhotoShop) to create and edit pictures
  • Learning Activity 2: Recognize various digital art formats for saving files (Ex. .bmp,.gif., .pict, .jpg)
  • Learning Activity 3: Create enhanced digital images by creating , editing, and combining graphic images
  • Learning Activity 4: Download images for editing
  • Learning Activity 5: Investigate implication of copyright issues
  • Learning Activity 6: Create comic strips, cartoons in graphics software programs
  • Assessments: Classroom discussion of copyright issues

Unit 3: Digital Camera and Using a Scanner

Digital Camera

  • Learning Activity 1: Take pictures using a digital camera after classroom demonstration of equipment
  • Learning Activity 2: Upload and save the digital picture in appropriate format
  • Learning Activity 3: Use digital graphics software (Ex. PhotoShop) to edit and enhance the picture taken with digital camera
  • Learning Activity 4: Create a safety commercial geared to target audience using digital camera images
  • Assessment: Printed copy of digital picture before, after editing
  • Assessment: Commercial slide show or video shown to class

Using a Scanner

  • Learning Activity 1: Explain, demonstrate procedures to scan a black and white and a colored picture
  • Learning Activity 2: Scan an image and save it in the correct format
  • Learning Activity 3: Scan an image and edit the image
  • Learning Activity 4: Insert scanned image into a word processing document that tells a story related to the picture
  • Assessment: Print copy of scanned and edited images to submit for rubric evaluation
  • Assessment: Print copy of story with picture and submit for rubric evaluation

Unit 4: Audio and Video Studies

Audio Studies

  • Learning Activity 1: Produce an audio commercial with narrative, background sound, music
  • Learning Activity 2: Produce a mini-radio program (Ex. News/sports broadcast)
  • Assessment: Rubric evaluation established by peers, teachers

Video Studies

  • Learning Activity 1: Demonstrate video editing software/hardware capabilities
  • Learning Activity 2: Evaluate suitability of sample video clips
  • Learning Activity 3: Demonstrate proper techniques for operating a camcorder
  • Learning Activity 4: Create a public service video for specific audience
  • Learning Activity 5: Create a personal video
  • Learning Activity 6: Create a commercial for a specific product
  • Assessment: Sample activities and rubrics for evaluation based on pre-determined criteria

Unit 5: Audio, Video Productions

  • Learning Activity 1: Edit an existing video tape
  • Learning Activity 2: Explain the major components of a video editing system and demonstrate correct operation of an editing system
  • Learning Activity 3: Write and develop a sheet in script for a five minute newscast
  • Learning Activity 4: Create and edit a personal audio/video resume
  • Learning Activity 5: Create a multimedia package for a sales presentation
  • Assessment: Vocabulary completion worksheets, teacher and peer evaluation in rubric format

Unit 6: Animation Tools

  • Learning Activity 1: Use a draw program to create stick figures with arms, legs in slightly changed positions ( Ex: show stages of a jumping jack position, etc.)
  • Learning Activity 2: Insert succeeding stick figures into a graphics animation program as frames that will sequence into an animation (Ex: Movie Works, Director 7)
  • Learning Activity 3: Animate a series of clip art images moving a car across the screen
  • Learning Activity 4: Create an original animation
  • Learning Activity 5: Create a clay figure; capture clay images in sequence of movements with digital camera. Insert images into slide show or animation software program
  • Assessment: Rubric assessment of sample activities

Unit 7: Sound Tools

  • Learning Activity 1: Demonstrate sound editing software/hardware
  • Learning Activity 2: Record and edit original sounds
  • Learning Activity 3: Discuss copyright issues on using sounds obtained from the Internet and CD ROMS
  • Learning Activity 4: Create a story using only sounds, including original, imported and mixed sounds
  • Assessment: Observation of sample activities
  • Assessment: Students site three examples of copyright infringement

Unit 8: Video Editing Tools

  • Learning Activity 1: Download a video clip, save it, and insert it in to a word processing document
  • Learning Activity 2: Edit and merge two video clips, adding special effects and titles
  • Assessment: Rubric for evaluation using established criteria for creating the project
